Centreville Beats Fairfax 35 to 0

Wildcats Rout the Rebels

Published October 16 2006

Wildcats welcomed the Fairfax Rebels to the 2006 Homecoming Game and an evening of crisp temperatures and some powerful wind. Centreville returned to their familiar form in their defeat of Fairfax and a final score of 35 to zero. The Centreville squad saw the game clock switch into "mercy" mode for the fourth time this season. The field was surrounded by Wildcat football alumni as the teams took the field for their 2006 match-up.

The Wildcat offense started quick and early. With just a bit more than three minutes into the first quarter and Brandon Davis sprints 84 yards for a Centreville touchdown. The extra point was wide to the left and the score started at Centreville 6, Fairfax zero.

Both teams encountered a challenge with the wind, as drives completed in one punt after another. As the end of the first quarter grew close, the Wildcat defense was on the field. Fairfax fired their ball into the air and straight into the grasp of Darryl Hamilton. As the teams switched field position the scoreboard was still lit with Centreville 6, Fairfax zero.

The second half was the perfect illustration of the impact wind can have on a football game. Both teams handed the ball back and forth with punts or on downs. The second quarter was scoreless as the teams took a break and the score remained Centreville 6, Fairfax zero.

Halftime was filled with floats, music, dancers and princesses. Click here to see our news and photos from the half time celebration, in which Centreville High School experienced a first-ever surprise!

Just Like Before

The first quarter was a preview of the third, as the Wildcat offense took the field to play an aggressive second half. P.J. Dunegan fired the football through the windy sky to Van Chew, who snagged the pass with one hand before jetting down the left sideline and into the end zone. Less than two minutes into the third quarter Centreville has another touchdown! The extra point was plagued with penalty flags before Brandon Davis muscles the ball into the end zone for a successful two-point conversion. With 10:20 displayed on the scoreboard the point tally is now Centreville 14, Fairfax zero.

Fairfax takes possession of the kick, but not for long. On their third play of the third quarter a loose fumble is recovered by Darryl Hamilton and the Wildcat offense returns to the field. Just 47 seconds after the prior touchdown, Andrew Morgan blasts his way into the end zone for the third Centreville touchdown of the evening. The extra point splits the uprights as the scoreboard flashes a big “21” for Centreville and a zero for Fairfax.

Fairfax has to punt the ball back to Centreville again. Wildcat offense has momentum, and takes full advantage. On the third play of their drive Brandon Davis zips 30 yards into the end zone for another Centreville touchdown. With 6:46 still to play in the third quarter the extra point is on-target and the score is now Centreville 28, Fairfax zero.

Each team continues the battle with the wind, as they encounter fruitless drives. With 3:21 remaining in the third quarter Wildcats take possession on downs at the 23 yard line. That's a long way to go, and Centreville is looking straight up the middle. After some penalty flags disrupt the flow of the game, Brandon Williams grabs a pass from Dunegan and accelerates to another Wildcat touchdown. With 1:46 left in the third quarter, the extra point is good, the score is now 35 to zero and we're in "mercy rule" mode.

Fairfax takes possession of the kick and, two plays later, the third quarter ends as the scoreboard glows Centreville 35, Fairfax zero.

As you know, the mercy rule makes the game move fast. The clock is still ticking while action is zipping, so pay attention! Fairfax has the ball and is orchestrating a long, time-eating drive down the field. The Rebel quarterback fires the ball into the windy air where Nick Basalyga intercepts it at the 20 yard line. Centreville's possession is less than three minutes, and they almost score another touchdown, but for a penalty flag that calls the ball back. A few plays later and the clock speeds to 0:00 and the game ends with a Wildcat victory and a final score of 35 to zero.
