Centreville Handles Hayfield 28 to 7
Cats Score, Hawks Sore
Published September 9 2006

The Varsity Wildcats traveled to their second road game on Friday and handled Hayfield with a victory and a final score of 28 to 7. Things did not start with the power and execution that Wildcat fans desire, but where's the fun without surprises and drama? The Wildcat attack was like a heavy diesel train, slowly picking-up speed until the momentum is unstoppable by the end of the trip. Centreville fans took a deep breath by the end of the game—much needed after holding that breath for the first 24 minutes of play.

While the Centreville community was experiencing a quick deluge of rain and thunder, the skies of Hayfield High School were cloudy but rain-free. Wildcats received the kick-off, and began a short series of miscues for the Centreville squad. The Hawks were the first to occupy the scoreboard, with 1:52 left in the firs quarter they successfully passed the ball into the end zone and nailed the extra point. Wildcats took possession of the ball as the first quarter ended with the score Hayfield 7 and Centreville 0.
Wildcats then brought their fans to their feet with a huge pass from Van
Chew down the right side of the field to Nick
Basalyga who motored the reception
past the goal line. With 3:24 remaining in the second quarter the extra point
was good and the score tied 7 to 7. Hayfield took possession and, after a
few downs, the first half of the game ended with the score tied at 7.
Their Better Half
A few drops of rain fell from the dark skies over Victor
Lutz Stadium during half time. Exactly what we needed to wash-away the anxiety
of first-half action. Both teams returned to the field where Centreville
kicked the ball into Hayfield's possession. Those drops of rain seemed to
have a big impact on the Hawks, as the ball and their feet seemed to begin
slipping out of control.
Hayfield's first possession of the second half ended
with a fumble viciously recovered by Brett Blumer at the 42 yard line. Don't
blink! The first Wildcat offensive play of the second half sent Brandon
Davis powering 42 yards into the end zone. With 7:54 remaining in the third quarter
Rosa's extra point was good boosting Centreville to 14 next to Hayfields
7 points.
As the Wildcat defense continued to pound Hayfield and our offense running right-to-left in front of the Centreville fans, fireworks could be seen just over the eastern horizon, just behind the Hayfield press box. Perhaps this was a sign for a Wildcat celebration later in the evening? Keep reading...!
Both teams were plagued with slippery field conditions (scratching our heads
- did it rain in the Hayfield area that day?) as they attempted to score.
The Hawks didn't stand a chance as the Wildcat defense forced another Hayfield
punt.
Centreville takes the ball at the 49 yard line, with Brandon Davis
running to a first down. This allowed Van Chew to run the ball 39 yards for
another Wildcat touchdown. Rosa's extra point was good elevating the score
to 21 points for Centreville and Hayfield stalled at 7. With 1:49 remaining
in the third quarter, we're starting to see some fireworks in our Varsity
squad!
Hayfield goes three-and-punt, with Centreville receiving, but slipping to down the ball at the 44 yard line. One play and the third quarter ends with the score Centreville 21 to Hayfield's 7.
The Wildcat offense has found their rhythm. They look crisp on the line of scrimmage and maintain a firm grasp on the football. They eat-up more than two-minutes of clock as they meticulously move the ball down the field and across the goal line with a Brandon Davis carry. With 9:46 left on the clock the extra point is good and the score bumps up to 28 for the Wildcats next to Hayfield's 7.
No Mercy
Last week saw the "mercy rule" for Woodson, but this
week there is no mercy for our cheerleaders. After a bit of a break in the
first half, Wildcat fans are cheering-on the cheerleaders as they mightily
power through push-up number 70 of the evening.
The Hawks continue to meet with frustration at the hands of the Wildcat
defense. After two plays a Hayfield fumble finds its way into the hands of
Nick Basalyga and Centreville's possession. Starting at the 30 yard line
the Wildcats move the ball to the 2 yard line, but fail to cross the goal
line. Hayfield gains possession on fourth down at the 10 yard line. Wildcat
determination forces more Hawk frustration as they meet Brett Blumer head-on
with tackle after tackle. Centreville forces another Hayfield punt.
Wildcats work toward an unsuccessful field goal attempt, putting their defense back in the game. The Centreville defense just keeps getting bigger and more powerful as the clock ticks away. With 30-seconds left on the clock, the Wildcats again take possession of the ball and the victory with a final score of 28 to 7 over the Hayfield Hawks.
