Centreville wrestles with Westfield

The first district game for the Wildcats ended with a disappointing loss to the Westfield Bulldogs and a final score of 27 to 7. This was the first game for Centreville in which their offense scored zero points.

This game has been anticipated for twelve months. Fans started filling the stands hours before kick off. The football squads were met with an insane ovation, even during their warm up session. The din is so loud the Centreville fans can't hear the national anthem begin!

Wild 'Cat fansAs the Varsity Wildcats take the field, they look over to see their fans glowing as the late afternoon sun dips behind the visitor bleachers. The glow and the amazing cheers make the evening feel like something magical. The football squad is pumped.

As they attempt to finish their final warm up session, the Westfield band and flag corp occupy the football field. There is no room for the Wildcats to complete their warm up time! Centreville coaches attempt to clear the field of performers, but confusion is the rule. Even the Bulldog football players enter the field and wander between the band musicians - seems like nobody is sure why the band is there!

Perfect Pick-off

Centreville receives the kick off to begin game, and the first few drives by both teams end without a goal. Westfield has the ball with 6:17 still in the first quarter, sending it into the air, and Centreville's Shemar Woods intercepts the ball, runs to the Wildcat sideline and is mobbed by a swarm of blue-and-white. Centreville's drive to the goal line is met with a strong Bulldog defense. Wildcats attempt a field goal that misses the uprights, and Westfield takes possession. Both teams take turns for the remainder of the first quarter with no results—the score is 0 to 0 as the teams switch field position for the second quarter.

Team efforts end in a punt for both squads in the second quarter, until Westfield finds themselves on the two yard line with less than a minute in the first half. They slip the ball into the end zone and succeed with their extra point. The score is now Westfield 7, Centreville zero with 52 seconds to play in the first half. A quick kick and a couple of Wildcat plays and the first half is over with the Bulldogs maintaining their lead.

Identified Flying Objects

A glance around the field at half time reveals not a spot available for a spectator on the Centreville side of the field. The fence around the gridiron is shoulder-to-shoulder with fans. The stands are packed so full even the aisles are occupied. The new burrito place, Moe's, decides it's a good idea to throw a stack of yellow frisbies into the audience—not such a great idea, after all, as they begin to bounce off people's heads while they wait for second half action to begin.

The Pounce Play

The second half begins and the defensive battle continues. Both teams take a number of possessions that end in punts. The game gets interesting as Westfield picks-off a Centreville pass on the 2 yard line. The Wildcat defense muscles the Bulldogs and they go nowhere. The Westfield punt attempt hits one of their own defenders and bounces to the turf in the end zone. A pile of Wildcats pounce on the ball for a Centreville touchdown—by the punt-return team! With 3:24 still to play in the third quarter the score is now tied at 7 points each.

A minute and a half later Westfield answers with their own touchdown. Now the score is Westfield 14, Centreville 7, and 1:52 left in the third quarter. Wildcats take possession as the third quarter ends with no change in the score.

Let's go C-ville...Centreville is maintaining a long possession of the ball with a series of successful plays on the ground and in the air. Wild 'Cat fans are on their feet chanting, "let's go c-ville, let's go!" Sadly, the series ends with a fumble that turns possession over to Westfield. Three plays later the Bulldog pass the ball for another touchdown. The extra point fails and the score is Westfield 20, Centreville 7. The games not over yet—still have 9:42 to play in the fourth quarter.

Wildcats take the ball, but soon must punt. Bulldogs continue their momentum and score another touchdown with a pass into the end zone. The extra point is good and the score rises to Westfield 27, Centreville 7 with 3:19 ticking-away on the scoreboard.

Take a Knee

Centreville controls the ball for more than two minutes and nine downs. The final offensive assault by the Wildcats ends in a pass, picked-off by the Bulldogs on the one yard line. With just 42 seconds left, Centreville's opponents take a knee for two downs to end the game. The scoreboard displays 0:00 and a final score of Westfield 27, Centreville 7.
